About EFA Film & Video
Education for the Arts is a countywide arts program for Kalamazoo offering a wide variety of arts programs that have been recognized at the State and National level. Vicksburg High School is the host site for schools and home schoolers in southern Kalamazoo County for Film and Video classes. These include Portage, Schoolcraft, Climax-Scotts and Vicksburg High Schools.
The Film & Video classes at Vicksburg teach students how to plan, write, direct, film and edit video productions using professional techniques and equipment. Hands-on training is combined with classroom instruction to teach students how to make a film from start to finish. Students have the opportunity to express their creativity and develop their skills through creating in-class and out-of-class productions including music videos, comedies, suspense, action, special effects films and more. Students work in one of the best film labs in the country with professional equipment and top-of-the line computers and software. Not only with they learn how to make movies, but they will also learn strong leadership and interpersonal communication skills which are keys to success in this world.
A large number of students have chosen to pursue education and careers in the world of film, video and television.

About Troy Smith
Troy Smith (Smitty) graduated magna cum laude from Western Michigan University in 1995 and went into the video and television industry. He worked for Zorbo Communications, WWMT-TV and Dillon's Video Productions. In 2000, He came to Vicksburg High School to teach Education for the Arts film and video classes for students in southern Kalamazoo county. This grew into teaching TV production classes, yearbook and Advanced film classes.
While teaching at Vicksburg, Mr. Smith continues doing professional film work with over 30 productions each year including filming student productions, creating educational and corporate videos, directing productions at Valley Family Church, producing TV commercials and feature films, and more. He has also written the film book that the students us as their text which is being used around the world.
Over the years, Mr. Smith has seen over 50 of his former students attend film school and/ or enter into the film industry. Many of his former students are scattered around the world working in television, making feature films and professional music videos, and producing work for companies like Pixar and Disney. Since 2002, his students have won over 300 awards!
Currently, Mr. Smith is earning his Masters degree in Education from Andrews University in Berrien Springs, MI.
